Milestone Systems announced the 2026 R2 release of its video management software XProtect and the autumn updates for its Arcules cloud video security platform on October 27, 2026.

The new version aims to simplify management operations, enhance information sharing among operators, and centralize the monitoring of system activities, especially in large security infrastructures with numerous cameras and devices.

Key features of XProtect 2026 R2 include automatic permission inheritance based on camera groups, centralized server logs, and the ability to add operational notes to camera views.

Milestone also unveiled innovations for the Arcules platform, such as cloud backup, secure device communication, and sensor integrations.

What's New with XProtect 2026 R2?

XProtect is a video management software (VMS) used for monitoring, recording, and managing video footage from IP camera systems.

Centralized management of hundreds or thousands of cameras in large facilities requires not only access to video footage but also systematic management of user permissions and system events.

The features highlighted by Milestone in the new version focus on these operational requirements.

Key innovations in the update include camera-based operational notes, centralized log management, and automatic authorization in device groups.

Operational Notes Can Be Added to Camera Views with Sticky Notes

The Sticky Notes feature, announced for XProtect Smart Client, allows operators to add notes to camera views.

These notes can include instructions related to the area monitored by the camera, site information, or details to be conveyed during shift handovers.

For instance, personnel working in a security operations center can associate implementation instructions for an entry point monitored by a specific camera with the relevant footage.

Notes can also be prioritized with colors.

According to Milestone, administrators can centrally configure and manage these notes via XProtect Management Client.

This approach can help reduce reliance on verbal information transfer, especially in shift-based security operations.

Centralized Log Management with Server Logs

One of the technically significant innovations in XProtect 2026 R2 is the Server Logs feature.

This feature consolidates system logs, audit trails, and records related to rule triggers generated within the XProtect infrastructure using a centralized management approach.

Log records in security infrastructures are crucial for examining configuration changes, investigating system errors, and auditing user activities.

Milestone states that the new feature supports integration with third-party monitoring and log management solutions.

This can facilitate the analysis of operational records and the execution of troubleshooting processes in large-scale XProtect installations.

However, centralized log collection alone does not imply advanced threat detection or automatic cyberattack prevention capabilities. Such capabilities depend on additional systems and configurations used.

Automatic Permission Inheritance in Camera Groups

The Permission Inheritance feature, introduced in the new version, simplifies the automatic application of access permissions defined in device groups to relevant cameras and devices.

For example, permissions for a security team with access to a specific camera group in a large campus may not need to be redefined individually when new devices are added to the same group.

This approach aims to reduce the management burden in projects with numerous cameras.

Milestone's 2026 R2 technical documentation also confirms enhancements supporting the viewing of effective permissions and the bulk removal of device-level permissions.

Managing permissions through groups can help enforce consistent access policies. However, permission design must be done carefully, as errors in group configurations can affect numerous devices.

Maps Feature: Managing Cameras and Alarms via Maps

Another development announced by Milestone is the Maps feature, which aims to associate camera views, alarms, and connected devices via geographical maps or building floor plans.

This approach is designed to help security operators identify the relevant location and access nearby cameras when an incident occurs.

Map-based monitoring can be valuable for operational awareness, especially in airports, hospitals, campuses, and large industrial facilities.

However, there is an important version distinction here.

Milestone announced that the Maps feature will be available in future XProtect Smart Client versions.

Therefore, this feature should not be considered an immediate innovation available to all users who install XProtect 2026 R2.

Cloud Backup and Secure Camera Communication in Arcules Platform

Along with the XProtect announcement, Milestone also unveiled updates for its Arcules cloud video security platform.

The Cloud Backup for Edge Gateways feature enables video footage to be transferred to the cloud via a lower-resolution secondary stream.

This method aims to limit bandwidth and storage requirements while offering the capability to store video outside of on-site systems.

Arcules also supports the association of environmental conditions and area occupancy information with video events through Triton Sensors integration.

Another innovation, Secure Device Communication, automatically encrypts communication between gateways and supported cameras via HTTPS.

These features belong to the Arcules platform. They are not functionalities directly added to all XProtect 2026 R2 installations.

Why is this Important for Security Integrators in Turkey?

Shopping malls, hospitals, organized industrial zones, transportation facilities, and large corporate campuses in Turkey may require video surveillance infrastructures consisting of numerous cameras.

In such projects, the operational features of the management software are as important as camera resolution and recording capacity.

Milestone's new version includes notable innovations, particularly in managing camera access permissions, reviewing centralized system logs, and facilitating operational information sharing among security personnel.

When deciding to update for existing XProtect users, license scope, compatibility of system components, utilized integrations, and maintenance requirements should be checked.

For instance, in multi-location installations, browser-based system health monitoring via XProtect Remote Manager can also be considered. Milestone states that this service is offered under Care Plus.

The true extent of benefits that the new version can provide depends on each facility's camera count, user permission model, and operational workflows.

Focus in Video Management Shifts to Operational Efficiency

The XProtect 2026 R2 and Arcules updates demonstrate that advancements in video surveillance software are not limited to merely supporting more cameras or recording at higher resolutions.

Associating camera footage with operational information, centrally managing access policies, and making system logs traceable are increasingly important features.

The innovations announced by Milestone aim to strengthen the connection between security management platforms and information technology management processes within physical security operations.

For security integrators, the primary evaluation should be the extent to which the new features meet the actual operational needs of the existing infrastructure.
